Dharamshala is a beloved destination for backpackers and known as India's second winter capital. If you are thinking about visiting Dharamshala, you will probably want to know how to get there. Fortunately, reaching Dharamshala is quite straightforward because this peaceful hill city has good transportation links with neighbouring states through various modes of travel. Perched at an altitude of 1,475 meters, it offers breathtaking views of the Dhauladhar mountain range. The town is divided into upper and lower regions, each with its distinct charm. McLeod Ganj, in the upper part, is a bustling hub of Tibetan culture, with monasteries, temples, and Tibetan markets. Dharamshala is a treasured destination for nature lovers, adventure enthusiasts, and those seeking inner peace.
The closest domestic airport to Dharamshala is Gaggal Airport, also known as Kangra Airport, and it is just 15 km away. There are daily flights connecting this airport to various cities in India, including the capital. To reach Dharamshala from Gaggal Airport, you can easily book a cab or taxi, and the journey takes only about half an hour. For tourists coming from other countries, consider taking a flight to Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi. From there, you have a few options: you can take a bus, hire a cab (it is about 490 km and takes around 10-11 hours), or catch another flight from IGI Airport to Gaggal Airport and follow the same process as mentioned earlier to reach Dharamshala.
Dharamshala does not have its own railway station. To reach Dharamshala by train, you will need to get off at the nearest railway station, which is the Pathankot railway station in Punjab, located about 86 km from Dharamshala. From there, you can either hire a cab or take a bus from the Pathankot Bus Stand to McLeod Ganj, which should take around 3 to 4 hours to reach Dharamshala. Another common option is the Chandigarh Railway station located 253 km from Dharamshala. This station connects to major Indian metro cities. After arrival at Chandigarh, you can take a bus or cab to reach Dharamshala, which should take approximately 5 to 6 hours.
Dharamshala is easily accessible by road. You can reach this beautiful city via NH 154 and NH 503, and the journey to Dharamshala by road can be just as enjoyable as the city itself. You have the option to drive yourself or hire a cab. For travellers coming from long distances, Delhi is a common starting point. There are many agencies in Delhi that offer vehicle rentals and cab services to Dharamshala. There are daily buses that operate between Delhi (from Kashmiri Gate ISBT) and Dharamshala, with most of them being semi-sleeper Volvos. We offer overnight buses for famous states of Himachal at customized basis.
